Hi everyone, just wanted to share a quick update about the AI Africa project and some of the incredible progress we’ve made.
So, we officially launched AI Africa on April 30th, 2024, at the British Council in Accra, Ghana. The vision from day one has been to equip Africans—especially youth, women, governments, and institutions—with world-class AI skills so that we can take the lead in the fourth industrial revolution. We’re also super focused on advancing data sovereignty, good governance, and making AI a normal part of life and business in every sector.
Since the launch, we’ve already trained over 2.3 million people across Africa. Nigeria is leading in numbers trained, but Ghana is really picking up speed too. In Ghana, we've partnered with so many institutions—like the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, Ghana Free Zones Authority, Ghana Digital Center, Accra Technical University, Sunyani Technical University, Ho Technical University, Wisconsin International University College, and more. We’ve also trained College of Health Yamfo, Aditobi traditional area, Amenfiman Rural Bank, and the NDC grassroots and more importantly tailors and dress making association of Ghana -Tema region. There’s been a lot of online training as well—both for trainers and trainees.
It’s not just Ghana—countries like Vanuatu, Nigeria, Liberia, and Eswatini are also benefitting. In Imo State, Nigeria alone, we’ve trained close to 2 million people, mainly in government institutions and universities, and we’re looking to expand to other states very soon.
A unique part of our project is what happens after the training. Those trained are moved into the AiAfrica Labs to do applied AI, and these labs are actually co-hosted in most ministries and universities across the countries. That’s where we build proof of value for concepts—meaning, we take ideas and turn them into real businesses, which then leads to employment opportunities.
For example, we’re running a project called “Ginger as Gold” at Wenchi Agriculture College, where there’s an Agric Lab equipped with its own AI-powered chatbot. In fact, each of our 15 labs has its own chatbot, and we’re actively training the models in all local languages for every country we’re working in. Investors are already reaching out to use our labs for business, and this is creating huge employment for the youth.
Our main training focus is advanced prompt engineering, because the real power of AI is knowing how to give the right instructions—how to prompt the models to work for you. This is key for business integration and for making sure everyone, not just techies, can use AI to solve problems and drive innovation.
With the support of the African Diaspora Central Bank and the Economic Trade Commission to Ghana, our target is to train at least 11 million Africans—and there’s talk of scaling up to 30 million by 2028! Ghana alone has already trained over 250,000 people and produced more than 5,000 AI experts, many of whom are now getting jobs, promotions, or even starting their own businesses.

Ai Africa Prompt Bible for the 54 Countries in Africa
Across the length and breadth of Africa—from the bustling markets of Lagos to the copper belts of Zambia, the coffee highlands of Ethiopia to the gold fields of South Africa—one question reverberates with renewed urgency: When will Africa’s abundant resources truly benefit its own people? Empowering Ghana’s Fashion Industry with AI: A Transformational Leap
The partnership between AiAfrica Project and the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (Tema Region) is a landmark step towards modernising Ghana’s fashion sector. By equipping local tailors and dressmakers with hands-on Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills, this initiative positions Ghanaian fashion professionals to compete on the global stage.
Why This Matters
The global AI in fashion market was valued at over $650 million in 2022 and is projected to exceed $4.4 billion by 2029, driven by digital innovation and demand for personalised products (Fortune Business Insights, 2023). In Africa, fashion is a $31 billion industry (Euromonitor, 2023), yet less than 5% of small and medium-sized fashion businesses currently leverage AI or digital tools for design and production.

Transforming Sickle Cell Advocacy and Early Detection in Africa: AiAfrica Project Partners with Simona Ephraim Foundation
The Simona Ephraim Foundation and AiAfrica Project are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership dedicated to transforming sickle cell disease awareness, early detection, and advocacy across Ghana and the African continent. This collaboration leverages the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate healthcare solutions and human resource development in one of Africa’s most pressing public health challenges.
Why This Matters
Sickle cell disease affects more than 300,000 babies born every year in sub-Saharan Africa, with Ghana alone accounting for an estimated 15,000 new cases annually (WHO, 2023). Despite this, early detection and effective management remain significant challenges due to limited resources, lack of awareness, and gaps in data-driven healthcare delivery. Recent studies show that less than 30% of at-risk children in Africa are screened early, and the continent loses over $100 million annually to sickle cell-related complications (CDC Africa, 2024).
By harnessing advanced AI tools, this partnership will:
Enhance Early Detection: Deploy AI-driven screening and data analytics to identify at-risk individuals faster and more accurately.
Build Capacity: Deliver tailored AI training for healthcare staff, volunteers, and advocates, equipping them with digital skills for impact.
Drive Awareness: Collaborate on continent-wide campaigns using digital platforms to reach millions with critical health education.
Support Policy and Research: Use real-time data for advocacy, policy development, and research that benefits the sickle cell community across Africa.
Empowering Change for Africa’s Health
This partnership marks a significant leap forward in integrating technology with health advocacy, aligning with Africa’s broader push for digital health innovation. With AI in healthcare projected to reach a $2.5 billion market in Africa by 2028 (Statista, 2024), initiatives like this will be pivotal in building healthier, more resilient communities.
Launch of the AiAfrica Project Labs
Africa is at a unique crossroads. Our continent is rich with talent, natural resources, and a youthful population. Yet, persistent challenges—ranging from food insecurity and limited access to quality healthcare, to underdeveloped infrastructure and digital divides—hold back our full potential. The answer lies not just in adopting new technologies, but in mastering and localizing them for African realities. AiAfrica Labs was established to do exactly that: to train, empower, and deploy Africa’s brightest minds in applied AI research and development across our key economic sectors. We are not just adopting AI—we are shaping it, owning it, and using it to solve Africa’s unique challenges and create massive opportunities. What makes AiAfrica different? We go beyond theory. Our approach is practical, sector-driven, and directly linked to Africa’s economic transformation.
We have set up 15 specialized labs—each dedicated to a high-impact sector, including:
Agriculture & Agri-Business
Education
Waste Management and Sanitation
Marketing, Logistics, Supply Chain & Entrepreneurship
Human Resource Management & Public Relations
Mining
Oil & Gas
Healthcare
Legal & Judicial Services
Accounting, Finance & Audit
Fashion & Design

Each lab is designed as a hub of innovation, research, and direct application. After receiving their foundational and advanced AI training, our graduates move directly into these labs. Here, they work on real-world projects, create proof-of-concept solutions, and help scale innovations across the continent.

New Publications on Ai in Education and Procurement

Train Africa’s teachers in AI – or risk an education crisis
In the 21st century, artificial intelligence (AI) is fast becoming the cornerstone of educational innovation worldwide, redefining curriculum design, assessment, and personalised learning. However, Africa stands at the precipice of an education crisis. Over 70% of children in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to basic digital learning tools, let alone exposure to AI-integrated instruction (UNESCO, 2023). Without urgent action to equip educators with AI competencies, the continent risks a dramatic widening of the global knowledge divide.

Coding is no longer enough: Why Africa needs AI literacy in every school
“Teaching children to code is like teaching them to read in an era when the world is already speaking in algorithms.”
Across Africa, education policymakers are proudly expanding coding programs in primary and secondary schools. From Lagos to Kigali, students are now learning how to write loops, build mobile apps, and understand the basics of computer programming. This progress deserves applause
Embedding Ethical AI in Public Procurement: Ghana’s path to trustworthy automation in E-governance
Smart Procurement: Using AI to combat fraud and boost efficiency in Ghana’s public spending
Ghana stands at a critical juncture in its digital transformation journey. As the nation advances its e-governance initiatives through platforms such as the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and digital procurement reforms led by the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), the integration of artificial intelligence presents both unprecedented opportunities and significant risks (Public Procurement Authority, 2023)
Ghana's public procurement system processes approximately GH₵40-60 billion annually, representing 50-70% of total government expenditure and serving as the primary mechanism through which public resources are converted into development outcomes for citizens (Public Procurement Authority, 2023). However, persistent challenges, including procurement fraud, inflated pricing, bid-rigging, and systemic inefficiencies, continue to undermine value for money and erode public trust in government financial management
